Bike Belt
Problem:
Riding a bicycle with motorized traffic presents a safety issue. Cyclists are often hard to see and their intentions are not easily interpreted by vehicle drivers. Cycling at night is an additional challenge, as most cyclists are not prepared with the proper equipment for visibility.
Solution:The object of the Light Belt is to make the cyclist more visible to surrounding traffic. The innovative Light Belt comprises of a center mounted stop light and side mounted directional lights. Just wear the Light Belt around your waist or chest and get on your bike. The Light Belt is hybrid powered by AA ...
Rethink Electric Car Transmissions
As companies around the world have grappled with how best to implement electric cars and electric transmissions, they have fallen prey to the trap of old design paradigms. They insist on placing a small electric motor under the hood, just like a gas motor, with batteries under the floor boards. It’s time to break from this mold, and to utilize one of one nature’s greatest gifts to mankind – Mechanical Advantage.
Archimedes famously said, “Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum to place it on, and I shall move the world.” Truer words were never spoken. The proposed ...
Personal Mass Transit System
Hawthorn Woods, Illinois United States of America
Jun 30, 2010
Every year over 1.2 million people die in the world due to traffic related accidents. The goal of the Spira Personal Mass Transit (PMT) system is to save lives by taking vehicles off the road and into the air. The system is comprised of four major components: a rail, mules, support structure, and Spira vehicles. This system is meant to be supported by a suspension system which is in turn supported by high voltage power line towers. Mules are the load carrying machines which shuttle the Spira vehicles from one city to another. They are driven by electric motors ...
Waste Heat Recovery and Storage
After observing a recent episode of the popular TV show "Ice Road Truckers", I was inspired to create a solution for one of the more dangerous scenarios that these drivers face. I've learned from this TV series just how important it is that the diesel engines in these trucks are kept running. At the extremely frigid temperatures these trucks are driven in stopping the engine for only a matter of minutes can seriously jeopardize the driver’s chances of re-starting it. Not being able to start or re-start the engine in this environment can pose a serious threat to the ...
Automated Package Transport System
This describes a proposed automated package transport system that supplements current methods for delivering small to medium sized packages. Advantages of this transportation method are both energy efficiency and speed of transport. Installation of the system into the existing infrastructure is possible without major environmental impacts due to the size of the transport vehicles, the physical “footprint” of the system, and the ease of locating this system in most areas.
The package transport system consists of distributed “container cars” that have their own electric propulsion, and operate on a raised overhead single integrated rail assembly. Figure 1 illustrates the ...
Hybrid Human Propulsion
Some years ago a design student solicited help for a class project to design the bicycle of the future. He needed a new propulsion system that would allow new design freedoms.
I found this challenge very exciting.
I proposed eliminating the mechanical chain and gearing system with electronics. The pedals would connect directly to a generator that would drive two hub motors. There would no longer be the constraints of a chain connecting from the pedals to the rear wheel. The braking would be accomplished by turning the hub motors into generators and storing the energy in a small ...
Change, Cast in Iron, not Stone
Construction zones are rarely regarded in a positive light, and for good reasons:
• Commuters languish in construction zones when roads need renovation or find finding alternate routes in an effort to avoid losing precious time to traffic jams.
• Local retail business suffer, losing significant amounts of business in an already challenging economic climate, and occasionally having to close their doors entirely as a result of lost business.
• Construction zones are ripe for injuries and accidents as road workers attempt repairs in close proximity to traffic, and drivers are more likely to experience fender-benders brought on by irritation or distraction.

Personal Transportation Pods
Introduction: A limiting factor in the use of mass transit is that rail stops are seldom close to the starting point (one's home) or the destination (work, etc.) . Parking garages fill and adequate transport is not available from the nearest stop to the final destination.
Many people like having their own space and not touching the same seats occupied by the masses. They like being able to store personal effects. The golf cart solution is not ideal for long distances because it cannot traverse high speed traffic arteries and many cities are poorly connected by low speed surface streets.

Magnetic-Levitating Vehicle
What problem does your design idea solve?
· Typical cars run on gas or batteries; two fuel sources. Now they carry the heavy loads of an internal combustible engine, gasoline fuel, alternator and storage batteries.
· Solar cars have the same problems; the weight of solar panels, alternator / battery charger and storage batteries.
· Both type cars must recharge or re-fuel. Drivers must ensure their destination is within reach and continue to pay at the pump.
The Magnetic-Levitating Vehicle removes the heavy weight; removes costs of fuel; and provides easy-upgrades by recoating the surface with latest thin-film efficient ...
More Productive GPS
While driving on the highways, quite often we come across messages displayed on electronic sign boards either over head or on the side of the road. Sometimes they could be running messages. The message could be an Amber Alert, a Traffic Alert or any other important message.
With the higher speed that we will be driving on the Interstates, often, we will not be able to read the message completely. We will never have a second chance to read the message. This will defeat the purpose of the message.
The cost of the GPS units has come down ...
INSTAR Triple Hybrid Vehicle
The eventual shift from our dependence on fossil fuels to sustainable, alternative energies has been exemplified by personal transportation. We rely on the high energy density of petroleum products to power our vehicles, but the rise of hybrid and electric vehicles in recent years has shown hints of the future to come. However, the shift has been gradual, mostly due to increased costs for only limited efficiency gains.
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) combine the flexibility of the ICE with the efficiency of the electric motor. Regenerative braking, recapturing the energy normally lost during deceleration, adds to the vehicle's range and ...
Olympus - Future Ready VTOL Business Aircraft
The Olympus is a four passenger business aircraft capable of performing point-to-point (PtP) vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air transportation whilst outperforming state-off-the-art helicopters on speed, range and noise emissions. The aircraft features a balanced combination of conventional aerospace techniques with several unique innovations, allowing for certification and a first flight in 2025.
In current day business aviation and special operations such as Search & Rescue (SAR) and MedEvac, a combination of helicopters and airplanes are used. Helicopters provide access to almost any location, but lack speed and range and produce a lot of noise (> 80 dB at ...
Mk1 Terra Tech Airship
The Mk1 Airship, is a whole new way to travel. Imagine transporting hundreds of tons of supplies around the world, with no fuel costs. The airship would allow people, cargo, medical supplies, vehicles, or just about anything else to get from one place to another without the ever fluctuating cost of fuel.
The airship is powered primarily by a series of solar arrays which charge a battery bank that then powers the airship's engine systems. However most of the lift is provided by hydrogen. Now many people know of how flammable hydrogen is, and the Hindenburg is a famous example ...
Live Information Bus Stop
The Live Information Bus Stop (LIBS) keeps people up-to-date on the location of their bus. By using location tracking (GPS), any bus system could signal all equipped bus stops with the current position of buses that frequent any given stop. Since they use little energy, an E-Ink display would allow each LIBS to run off an attached photovoltaic panel. Bus information would be transmitted wirelessly, paired with the PV panel energy source, this allows for ease of installation. The housing should be designed to be aesthetically pleasing, yet also robust to withstand the rigors of weather and citizens. It’s ...
The Baumann Strain Gage Grid™ (BauSGG™)
The Baumann Strain Gage Grid™ (BauSGG™) will be used to continuously monitor the safety of reinforced concrete bridge structures.
In the recent past, concrete bridges in the U.S. and elsewhere have collapsed causing deaths and great financial loss and interruption of transportation systems.
The BauSGG™ is a proprietary design modification of the patented BauGrid® Welded Reinforcement Grid™ (BauGrid® WRG™). Foreign and U.S. patents for the BauGrid® WGR™ have been granted to Hanns U. Baumann S.E. of Baumann Research and Development Corp., Laguna Beach, California.
Over 2000 tons of BauGrid® WRG™ have been used to construct California’s ...
Air-stream
Air stream a wide, fast stream laminar flow turbulent-exit machine.
The air at the front of the device it ionized by electrodes that extend into the airflow area to begin the flow. Progressing rearward charged plates each progressively growing stronger at each step cause the air to accelerate towards the plates at 3 to 5 miles per hour. Once this has occurred, the electrodes withdraw.
The air is moving as a self-initiated mass.
At the entryway, are elements that cool the air as it enters.
This cooling forces air to compact upon itself. It also causes pressure waves to ...
Reducing Oil Reliance Via LIM and IPT Technologies
Current surface transportation technology contributes to over two-thirds of US petroleum consumption and nearly one-third of greenhouse gas emissions. Measures to decrease this reliance on petroleum will improve national security and decrease global climate change. Electric vehicles (EVs) offer such an opportunity, but challenges with battery capacity, rate of power delivery, and recharging requirements limit vehicle range, acceleration, and convenience, respectively. Methods for reducing fuel consumption by aircraft during idling, taxiing, and take-off also offer opportunities for increased efficiency. NASA-GSFC proposes the novel implementation of both linear induction motor (LIM) and inductive power transfer (IPT) technologies to transform EVs ...
All-Terrain Passive Adaptive Rover
Manned space missions have a great risk because of the harsh environment and the unpredictable variables. For that reason, mobile robot exploration missions are preferred. Earth control of a Mars rover always introduces an almost forty-five-minute time delay because of a huge distance between two planets. For that reason, it is necessary to design an autonomous rover. In rough terrain, it is critical for an autonomous mobile robot to maintain stability. Wheels of rover may be stuck in loose soil, or in the worst case, an obstacle may cause the rover to tumble. This may put whole mission in ...
Monorail Air Cushion Ultra high Speed Train
Monorail Air Cushion Ultra High Speed (MAC-UHS) Transportation System
Description
Using a combination of well-known and proven technologies, a highly cost-effective and innovative solution to ultra high-speed passenger train transportation is presented. The proposed Monorail Air Cushion (MAC) system uses lightweight vehicles built with aircraft technologies, propelled via electric linear motors, riding on wheels at low speed and on an air cushion at high speed, straddling a modular elevated monorail track. When compared to existing conventional high-speed trains, this concept would lower the cost of infrastructure and equipment, and decrease the time to build a transportation network by ...
