Under Prosthetics, one major problem faced by amputees is improper suspension in the prosthetic leg they use. The discomfort they feel are loosening of socket, improper socket alignment and improper suspension design. This condition can be improved.
In order to provide a better grip and to improve the suspension, a new idea is proposed. Use of a flexible polymer material with a ‘Chinese Finger grip Braided design’ around the stump region of the leg provide better grip and improved suspension. This can also be used in between the silicone layer and the flexible socket. Braided structures are very efficient at absorbing torsional and tension loads and impacts. Braided composite material has been selected since it is strong and can be easily shaped.
ADVANTAGES OF BRAID PATTERN:
The aspect of braid that makes it potentially useful for a suspension is that it constricts under tension, as illustrated by the following diagram. This means that the grip force of the suspension sleeve is roughly proportional to the tension load on it. There is precedent for using braid this way in the medical industry, which uses braided sleeve for orthopedic traction.
1) To enhance the comfort, this pattern can be implemented using silicone and nylon (fabric).
2) To enhance the economy, this pattern can be implemented using Lycra meshed with cotton fiber.
The designing was done in SOLIDWORKS software, since it provides an inbuilt feature in Helix design which facilitates creating alternatively varying diameter helix. Comparative analysis of several designs have been done by ANSYS to check their directional deformation and stress distribution.
COMPILING OF RESULTS:
Both the maximum principal stress and the shear stress values in the present design is less than in the proposed model, but the variation is minimal. More over the values are little above the tensile strength of the material.
Deformation in the radial direction in turn corresponds to the grip around the stump region, higher the value, greater the grip around the stump.
A below knee prosthetic limb basically includes the following parts.
iii) Pylon Rod
Hereby we conclude that this project on alternate socket design for below knee prosthetic users has been designed and fabricated with standard material, presently available to increase the suspension and also the design has been implemented in an alternate economic material to increase its usage among amputees, unable to use exoskeleton prosthetic accessories.
