PHOD stands for Payload Hauler, Omni-Directional, and is code for prototypes that prove out the premise of Ross Garside’s USA Patent US9320941B2 & globally filed invention, of a novel, tensioned, inwardly rotating toroidal wheel, which creates a new type of precise relative motion upon trees, pipes, or all manner of columns. A fixed PHOD can also move material relative to itself, opening up use-potential in conveyor markets.
PHOD is the elegant solution that solves a dangerous issue - controlled lift of weighty objects & people up and back down, at any angle, safely, cheaply, and to any height.
PHOD’s screw-thread concept results in a tether tip-flip motion, raising anything attached, and avoiding tedious labor or heavy large-footprint equipment that is normally required. The initial prototypes lift payloads up to 35-70 lbs plus PHOD’s 10-22 lb weight.
Our prototype performance, once lifting a payload 1,300 feet up & down over 3 hours on a single small lithium 6-pack battery charge, gives evidence that the PHOD method is quite energy-efficient compared to existing lift methods.
Designs can accommodate a wide range of payload needs. PHODs haul in any direction with near-equal ease, with no need for a brake system. Autonomous action means no prior at-altitude device and unlimited height, save for the columns being climbed, and no added cost-per-foot. PHOD requires far lower parts count, which reduces cost and increases safety vs. all competing products. Fall risk is nearly removed via redundant drives. Set-up takes @ 5 minutes per PHOD, as it auto-adapts to column diameter changes like tree knots or utility box protrusions on poles.
Being electric or mechanically powered, PHODs can work in any environment, such as underwater or in space. Swarmed PHODs create uses, such as always-optimal-height scaffolding, direct-lift cranes, and self-erecting structures & very large, yet portable, self-erecting 3D-construction printers.
So far, 90+ existing item types are identified that PHOD can outperform, with costs at 80%+ or less than most current methods.
We estimate our U.S. initial market, Security & Sensors, at only 5% penetration to be $2.5bn - $3.0bn out of a $537bn total market. As a basic new type of motion-transmission, the total PHOD market has global sales potential across hundreds of products and uses, including creating both entirely new products and whole markets.
One sensor market of priority is to provide Rainforest Connection with PHODs that deploy their forest-destruction monitoring sensors, so their volunteers can avoid risk in manually climbing trees, and they can also vastly speed up their deployments to help stop the Deforestation cause of global warming.
PHOD can save lives & injuries by eliminating accidents due to falls, boom electrocution, topples, and cable breakage. Construction in the USA alone has appx. 200 deaths due to falls. PHOD needs improvement R&D for a commercial product. Most manufacturing shops having 3D Cad, Software & Phone App development, Electro-Mechanical, and Manufacturing expertise, can produce PHODs.

A relative is on severe disability due to line-electrocution from operating a lift boom.
I desire PHOD to provide a much safer way of doing high-altitude construction and maintenance.
Rainforest Connection has expressed interest in PHOD to eliminate any need for their volunteers to risk their lives climbing trees to deploy their Deforestation Detectors, which stops the #2 cause of global warming. PHOD tech should also greatly increase the speed of their deployments to protect Rainforests.
I also wish PHOD tech to provide improvements in over 90 product areas that can benefit from this elegant, "uplifting", technology, with the possibility of wholly new sports, safer hunting tree-stands, and other games, systems, & products that may result.
One I am keen to pursue is to partner with Skytran maglev, to add a PHOD enhancement to their design that will eliminate any need for roads, bridges, parking lots, or elevators -whose external building egress from any floor will end any future 9-11 type horrific fall deaths.
PHOD may also be a candidate drive for the Space Elevator project, which can dramatically lower to-orbit costs.
In general, I wish to make the Y dimension as easy, safe, and comfortable to access as X & Z dimensions (the ground).
