The Untethered Project aims to provide the ultimate freedom and ease of mind for above the knee amputees by providing their electronic prosthetics with regenerative energy.
We are able to do that by installing an attachment over microprocessor knees; this attachment harvests the negative biomechanical energy of the user and converts it into electrical energy that charges the prosthetic's battery.
This attachment is needed as 50% of amputees fear falling, and 49% of all amputees are injured in falls injury each year. Depleted batteries are the main cause of microprocessor knees collapsing, which lead the wearer to fall and get injured. Furthermore, the battery life of microprocessor knees quickly deteriorates after 3 months of use, making them last as little as 3 hours in extreme cases.
