Cost-Effective Alternative to Titanium for Aircraft Parts

Aircraft landing gear and structural components and turbo-machinery components exploited at moderate temperature (“critical components” or “components”) are subjected to severe loading, corrosion, and adverse environmental conditions and they have complex shapes varying from thin to thick sections.

Materials such as high-strength titanium alloys and high strength steels are widely used for those critical components. The main criteria for choosing the materials are their specific strength (tensile strength to density ratio), fatigue strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance.

High-strength titanium alloys Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al, and Ti-5Al-2Sn-2Zr-4Cr-4Mo are excellent candidates for the critical components due to their high specific strength and fatigue strengths, good toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance. However, their high cost and issues with their machining limits applications of these alloys.

The near net shape (NNS) powder metallurgical-based hot isistatic pressing (PM HIP) technology is well verified for the numerous critical applications in the aerospace and turbo-machinery is considered as an advanced shaping and consolidation process for manufacturing of the critical components from the high strength titanium alloys.

This proposal describes high-strength, corrosion-resistant steel (“HSCR steel”) as a material for manufacturing of the aerospace and turbo-machinery critical components and that material is a low-cost substitution of the titanium alloys due to its high specific strength, high fatigue strength, good toughness, and corrosion resistance.
