A person receives information mainly visually, therefore, despite the active introduction of digital intelligent technologies, traffic lights, like road signs, is the most important means of visualizing the rules for organizing and ordering traffic flow.
The purpose of the Dalton Traffic Light is to ensure equal and indivisible safety and new conveniences for all road users; to radically improve road safety and the quality of life of people with color vision deficiency (color blindness) and other visual impairments.
1. The color and shape of each signal match (Figures 1,2,3)!
The functions of the red, yellow, green arrows and additional green arrows of the standard traffic light remain unchanged, but their design can be stylized in combination with the new configuration. For example, yellow triangular signal has an arrow-shaped outline and is, in fact, the arrow with an increased illuminated area.
2. The Dalton Traffic Light compared to the current conventional traffic light design provides the following advantages:
- Social advantages and safety
The differently shaped lights may remove ambiguity for people with color perception disorders (color blinders) and those visually impaired. This also may allow lifting restrictions/bans on driving license issuance currently applied to them in some countries. - Information benefits and safety
The apex of the amber triangle markedly signaling the forthcoming (red/green) light signals allows road users to anticipate the control signals in advance. Information uncertainty of traffic light signals of the same circular shape is eliminated. - Economic advantages
Manufacturing, installation and maintenance of compact traffic light (two-section or one-section system) in comparison with traditional three-section model is more cost-effective (reduced material intensity, size, transportation costs, etc.). - The aesthetics of the urban environment
The compact traffic lights (two-section or one-section system) reduce visual pollution.
3. Important anti-conservative aspects of the device implementation:
- The Dalton Traffic Light is logically justified and relevant for all road users, convenient for people with color blindness and visual impairments.
- The Dalton Traffic Light does not require changes to the colour, position or signal sequence of existing traditional "round" traffic lights.
- The functions of the red, yellow, green arrows and additional green arrows of the standard traffic light remain unchanged.
- The above factors apply equally to horizontal traffic lights.
4. Modern technologies make it possible to create the proposed Dalton Traffic Light in new configuration – The author is in contact with specific manufacturers. The newly proposed Dalton Traffic Light may be implemented in two stages: 1) introduce the basic three-section system; 2) (after recognition of the new basic three-section model by users in the first stage) introduce the compact systems (Fig. 1 - 2,3).
5. Conditionally bureaucratic limitation of popularization of the Dalton Traffic Light for countries that have ratified the UNECE Convention on Road Signs and Signals, which specifies the shape of the light signals of conventional traffic lights. For countries that have not adopted the Convention (e.g. Australia, China, USA…), there are no such restrictions on the distribution of traffic lights in the new format.
