Traditional vehicle dampers rely on hydraulic oil to control motion and absorb energy. While widely adopted, these systems suffer from hysteresis, inconsistent force behavior, fluid degradation, leakage, and limited adaptability across changing operating conditions. Existing electromagnetic suspension technologies attempt to improve performance, but still rely heavily on hydraulic architectures, making them expensive, complex, and difficult to scale beyond luxury applications.
Ganaio has developed a patented oil-free passive electromagnetic damper that replaces traditional hydraulic damping with electromagnetic motion control. Instead of using fluid-based resistance, the system generates damping forces through the interaction of permanent magnetic fields and conductive materials, enabling a simpler and more consistent damping architecture with fewer wear-prone components.
Unlike active suspension systems that require high-bandwidth control loops and significant power consumption, Ganaio’s design operates passively by default while still enabling optional semi-active controllability through electrical loading. This allows the system to achieve high responsiveness and repeatable force characteristics without the complexity associated with traditional active suspension technologies.
Testing and simulation have demonstrated significant reductions in hysteresis and force variability compared to conventional dampers, improving ride consistency, stability, and durability. The architecture also eliminates hydraulic oil entirely, reducing maintenance concerns and enabling new possibilities for scalable manufacturing and integration.
While originally developed for automotive suspension systems, the technology has broader applications across robotics, autonomous systems, defense vehicles, industrial motion systems, and other high-cycle linear motion environments where precise passive damping and durability are critical.
As mobility systems continue evolving toward electrification, autonomy, robotics, and advanced defense platforms, there is growing demand for motion-control technologies that are more reliable, efficient, scalable, and adaptable than traditional hydraulic systems. Ganaio’s passive electromagnetic damping platform aims to provide a foundational next-generation solution for these applications.
