ImPAQ Roadster™: Redefining Urban Mobility

The ImPAQ Roadster™ is an ultra-compact, three-wheeled pedal-electric vehicle engineered to bridge the gap between open-air cycling and automotive comfort and utility. With sports car styling, yet within the e-bike regulatory framework, this design represents the first practical folding micro-EV in history with real weather protection. It features a comfortable seat, adjustable drive pedals, 750-watt rear hub motor, 20-inch wheels, and a weight near 70 kg. Future versions can offer 26-inch fat tires, more power, and two passenger models.

While most micromobility options are purely utilitarian and open to the elements, the core innovation lies in a folding fabric body and polycarbonate windshield, plus side vent windows, that all nest together or extend seamlessly. This is coordinated through a multi-axial folding mechanism using ten steel tube subframes for strength and safety. In a single, fluid motion under 10 seconds, the structural chassis collapses in all dimensions simultaneously to just 14% of its original volume. First tests without the body have been under five seconds.

This transformation shrinks it into a compact package that can be wheeled easily—with motor assist—through doorways, into elevators, and inside offices or apartments without heavy lifting. Sixteen ImPAQs park vertically in a single standard car parking space. To protect these breakthroughs, both design and utility patents are currently in process.

Optimized for personal transit, corporate campuses, and last-mile delivery, this project directly tackles pollution and resource waste. Following a 1/3 scale model, the full-scale prototype is being built in rural Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica, to validate the production process and demonstrate its functional advantages and durability.

FEASIBILITY/MANUFACTURABILITY:

Designed by an FAA-certified aircraft mechanic, the chassis is optimized for high-yield, cost-effective manufacturing utilizing standard cutting and welding. The structural tubing has been analyzed for a driver up to 125 kg plus 25 kg of cargo. By incorporating standardized, globally available bicycle components and 3D printing of minor parts, specialized tooling is minimized. Bypassing the prohibitive tooling investments typical of traditional automotive manufacturing makes it easily scalable via local franchisees and micro-factories worldwide. The decentralized production model is specifically designed to foster rapid, open-market adoption in developing regions.

The precise 1/3 scale model successfully tested the multi-axial folding kinematics and defined the patent-pending styling. The full-scale physical prototype will validate final tolerances, cable routing, nesting, and streamlined assembly using standardized jigs, while confirming long-term comfort and durability. Rigorous testing exceeding 1,000 folding cycles daily is expected.

MARKETABILITY:

The target market consists of design-conscious urban commuters and cyclists, as well as shared mobility systems facing space constraints, inclement weather, and vehicle theft. Commercialization will kick off by the end of 2026 with an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign at an introductory price near $8,000, followed by worldwide expansion driven by localized manufacturing franchises. The global micromobility market is projected to surpass $200 billion by 2030. The ImPAQ Roadster™ uniquely fits this segment by solving the primary barriers to widespread e-bike adoption, driving the shift toward sustainable mobility via a comfortable, efficient, and highly practical vehicle.
