The UPship™ is an innovative, helium-inflated semi-rigid airship designed to provide sustainable, low-cost transport for people and cargo in remote or ecologically sensitive regions lacking ground infrastructure. Multiple patents are expected.
Innovation
Core innovations include:
-
Improved Semi-Rigid Framing: A 6-section structural keel along the bottom unifies all critical components (mooring, cabin, batteries, fins, propulsion), reducing component count by over 50% compared to legacy designs. It lowers operating pressure and fabric weight, optimizes weight distribution, improves damage resistance, and greatly simplifies component assembly/replacement.
-
Internal Structure: Maintains an optimized circular cross-section, minimizes helium loss, allows easy internal inspection/repair and boundary layer control, and houses internal cabin and cargo areas.
-
Zero-Emissions: Low-drag aerodynamics make battery-electric propulsion practical for commercial utility, drastically slashing energy/maintenance costs and eliminating flight-weight changes due to fuel burn. Energy use per ton-mile is a fraction that of other aircraft.
-
X-Fins: An "X" tail configuration where lower ruddervators double as lifting surfaces and house dual-purpose landing wheels/water floats for land/water operations.
-
Remote Operations: A proprietary and revolutionary load-exchange system delivers cargo/passengers from a stabilized 50-meter hover using a single earth/sea anchor—eliminating heavy winches and cutting airport and ground crew needs.
-
Arctic De-Icing: This major problem is solved using the bow thruster fan to sequentially over-inflate longitudinal envelope sections to dislodge ice. Angled aft propellers are located above and behind the hull to avoid dislodged envelope ice and throwing ice into the envelope or companion propeller.
-
Low-Speed Control: An integrated bow thruster and proprietary thrust diversion system enable instant all-directional control and quiet hovering without the time delays of others’ proposed tilting propellers.
-
Heavy lifting: Four motors – two front and two rear - can all vector to add to lift and control capabilities without interfering with passenger or cargo exchange.
-
Additional Key Advancements: Friction-less gas valves with one moving part, mechanical aerodynamic pilot assist, active boundary layer control, and pilot-only mooring. 3D printing of optimum envelope reinforcement.
-
Modular Portability: The entire design is modular, scalable, and transportable via standard shipping containers.
Feasibility & Manufacturability
Designed by an FAA-certified mechanic with 35 years of global experience as chief designer for airship projects in 8 countries, from 32 to 450 meters long, the aircraft is optimized for aerodynamic, structural, and operational efficiency. Recyclable aluminum girders and off-the-shelf electric powertrains reduce supply chain risks. Early production will take place in Costa Rica for year-round operation. Physical kinematics will be validated via simulations and physical scale models.
Marketability
UPship targets a global market spanning eco-tourism, advertising, cargo delivery, and emergency relief. It fills a vital niche in regions lacking infrastructure, such as northern Canada, Indonesia, and the Amazon basin. Market entry begins with an economical 2-seat 36-meter Minimum Viable Product (UPship 3600) under Costa Rican LSA rules for immediate tourism revenue, scaling into the 8-passenger UPship 5400 via an Argentine Type Certification partnership, leveraging reciprocal FAA agreements. Cargo variants up to 100+ tons are practical.
