This concept is a modular storage system for pickup truck beds. It consists of two units, attached to each other, which span the tailgate opening, and are secured via attaching hardware to the rear-most tie-down hooks in a typical pickup bed. The units could be used in an open bed or one with a tonneau cover, and are collapsable to minimize their footprint when not in use.
Figure 1 illustrates the concept, showing two identical units at the rear of a pickup truck bed. Figure 2 illustrates the primary pieces of a unit, a Base, Top, Bottom, two Sides, and a Frame Panel with a hinged closure that latches to the Frame Panel. T and B are each connected to the Base via a hinge. S1 and S2 are each hinged in the middle (similar to a bi-fold door) and are connected to both the Base and the FP via hinges.
The proposed size of each unit is illustrated in Figures 3, 4, and 5. The height and width allow the units to fit in a typical full-sized pickup truck bed, and the proposed depth is a function of the height, and must be less than the height to facilitate the collapsable feature of the unit.
Figure 3 illustrates Embodiment I, which is a fully enclosed unit. Figure 4 illustrates Embodiment II, with a base with holes to facilitate the handles of shovels, rakes, brooms, etc. to pass through while the head is contained inside the unit. Figure 5 illustrates Embodiment III which is a pass-through unit to facilitate full access to half of the pickup truck bed. The units could potentially be manufactured with an interchangeable panel in the Base, whereby a solid panel would create Embodiment I, a panel with holes would create Embodiment II, and removal of the panel (and removal of the hinged closure in the Frame Panel) would create Embodiment III.
Figure 6 illustrates two cutting planes/sections, AA and BB, to help illustrate the collapsable feature. Section AA is reflected in Figure 7a and Figure 7b (collapsed state). T would fold first against the Base, followed by B which would fold against T. Similarly, Section BB is reflected in Figure 8a and Figure 8b (collapsed state). With T and B folded, S1 and S2 would then fold and be sandwiched between B and FP.
The hardware required to securely mount the two units in a pickup truck bed is not illustrated and would likely need to be unique for each truck brand (Ford, GMC, etc.).
The design could be injection molded from a durable impact-resistant polymer. Each panel would have a smooth side and a waffle-like side. The smooth side would be on the inside of the unit, except for T where the smooth side would be on the outside to prevent water or ice accumulation. Two-shot molding could also be used to incorporate elastomer seals on panel edges to create a water-tight version of Embodiment I.
