ZEDS - Zero Emission Driving System

Traditional mechanical braking systems generate significant metallic particulate matter through material wear. Research indicates that brakes account for more than 30% of a vehicle's total operational particulate emissions, frequently exceeding the exhaust output of modern internal combustion engines. Upcoming Euro 7 regulations introduce strict regulatory limits on these secondary emissions, forcing the automotive sector to develop new, cleaner braking methods. The Zero-Emissions Driving System, or ZEDS, addresses this challenge by combining an in-wheel electric motor with a magnetorheological brake within the vehicle driveline. This integrated technology substitutes conventional disk and drum brakes. The core mechanism utilizes a smart fluid composed of an oil base containing dispersed ferromagnetic particles. Deceleration is achieved through electromagnetic actuation. When an electrical current passes through the system coils, it generates a magnetic field that causes the metallic particles to align. This alignment changes the fluid viscosity, turning it into a semi-solid state that produces the necessary braking torque between the rotor and stator components. Because the system generates torque through fluid shear rather than the physical degradation of mechanical pads or disks, it avoids the wear that causes particulate pollution.

Operating entirely by-wire, ZEDS eliminates the mechanical and hydraulic lag typical of classic braking networks. The fluid response time is 0.1 seconds, which is three times faster than a standard hydraulic circuit response time of 0.3 seconds. This rapid electronic activation reduces vehicle stopping distances by up to 10 meters, providing an advantage for passenger safety and electronic stability control integration. The architecture works with a patented control strategy called SAFEST. This software optimization manages energy recovery during regenerative braking maneuvers, reducing overall vehicle energy consumption by 3% and directly extending electric vehicle driving range.

The implementation of ZEDS provides a direct positive environmental and operational impact for global transport. Durability tests demonstrate that the system maintains reliable braking behavior for over 100,000 km, removing the recurrent pad-replacement maintenance cycle that remains an issue for modern electric vehicle fleets. Furthermore, the geometric simplicity of the design removes the need for conventional heavy hardware including hydraulic fluid lines, vacuum pumps, master cylinders, and brake boosters. ZEDS offers a scalable, modular alternative that eliminates secondary brake pollution at the source, creating a safe, highly controllable, and fully sustainable solution for the future of clean mobility.

Point Zero is a spin-off company born in the Innovative Electric and Hybrid Vehicles research group, in Politecnico di Torino, now working to make this transformative idea real and available in the market. The industry shows interest in the solution, with two of proof-of-concept projects already under development and others in the pipeline, Point Zero is on track to deploy its go-to-market strategy with pre-series production in selected niches in the next 2 years.

Let's break through the future with ZEDS and make braking safer and cleaner!
