The Eco-Protect Smart Chainsaw is an intelligent forestry system designed to reduce illegal logging, protect environmentally significant trees and improve sustainable forest management through precut sensing, AI-assisted classification and automated cutting authorization. Unlike conventional chainsaws that begin cutting immediately after the trigger is engaged, the proposed system performs a rapid precut assessment before the chain is activated, ensuring that cutting authorization is determined before any damage occurs.

Before each cut, the operator positions the guide bar close to the target tree, where an integrated sensor suite performs a non-destructive scan within seconds. The system combines optical imaging, near-infrared (NIR) sensing, moisture measurement, electrical conductivity analysis, temperature sensing and optional RFID/GPS identification. Data from these sensors are processed using sensor-fusion algorithms and an onboard AI model to classify the target as a living tree, dead tree, fallen log or processed timber. If the system identifies a protected or unauthorized living tree, the trigger remains electronically locked, while dead wood, approved harvests and processed timber can be cut normally. If confidence is insufficient, the operator is prompted to perform another scan or obtain authorization rather than risking an incorrect decision.

The innovation lies in integrating biological sensing, artificial intelligence, secure authorization and active tool control into a commercially practical forestry platform. While individual sensing technologies already exist, their combination into a pre-cut decision system that authorizes or prevents cutting before blade engagement represents a significant advancement over conventional chainsaws. The design also incorporates tamper-detection features that monitor sensor integrity, firmware authenticity, and system health to discourage unauthorized modification or circumvention.

The proposed system is designed for cost-effective manufacturing using commercially available electric chainsaw platforms, embedded microcontrollers, cameras, solid-state sensors, wireless communication modules, and electronic motor controllers. The modular architecture enables manufacturers to produce multiple product variants, ranging from consumer models providing basic tree identification and safety warnings to professional systems supporting digital harvesting permits, GPS logging, fleet management, cloud reporting, and regulatory compliance. Existing electric chainsaw designs can be adapted with minimal mechanical modification, reducing development costs and simplifying large-scale production.

The system can operate under multiple authorization models, including unrestricted private-use mode, commercial forestry mode, protected forest mode, and government-managed permit systems, making it adaptable across diverse legal and operational environments. Potential applications include commercial forestry, conservation organizations, national parks, utility vegetation management, municipal landscaping, timber certification programs, and environmental monitoring. By combining intelligent sensing, pre-cut authorization, AI-assisted decision-making, tamper-resistant security, and scalable manufacturing, the Eco-Protect Smart Chainsaw offers a practical, market-ready solution for responsible forestry while supporting sustainable resource management and modern digital forestry practices.

I have dedicated my life for invention and research because not only I have big dreams but also I want to make big difference in the world. We all have a talent we know or did not find out yet. Mine happens to be inventing. I discovered this talent of mine when I was in second year student during my university life. Starting from that point everything seemed not important except creating new ideas. So, until now I have invented more than 50 inventions which are new to the world and the rest are intended for Ethiopia that will change the life of many people including mine. But because of poverty, theft and many reasons I could not manage to make it. But all that matter is I will never give up. I will invent until and after I become successful. That makes me a strong entrepreneur. My skills are aided with a mechanical engineering degree on design, production and sales expertise.
