The Secure Tracking & Asset Recovery (STAR) system, developed by the Science & Technology Research Institute for Defence (STRIDE), is an innovative real-time laboratory asset monitoring solution designed to overcome the vulnerabilities of manual equipment tracking in high-stakes research and testing environments.
When high-value equipment is frequently deployed to field test sites and military camps, manual logbooks often lead to incomplete records, operational delays and heightened risks of asset loss or damage. To systematically resolve this, the STAR system seamlessly integrates low-cost, commercially available RFID hardware with a powerful, internally developed software suite. The physical architecture utilizes two RFID antennas positioned at laboratory entry points to accurately detect the direction of movement for tagged assets. As equipment passes through this access point, the data is instantly routed to a local workstation and processed sequentially through four specialized software modules: Data Acquisition receives the raw antenna inputs; Movement Processing converts these signals into distinct entry/exit events; Loan Management handles digital borrowing workflows; and Notification cross-references the physical movement against authorized digital approvals. If a discrepancy occurs such as an unapproved asset leaving the room, the system immediately triggers a rule-based alert for security action. All processed data automatically populates a centralized, real-time dashboard. This interactive interface gives laboratory officers comprehensive visibility over current asset locations, borrower identities, loan statuses, and comprehensive transaction histories, entirely eliminating fragmented manual tracking.
The defining innovation of the STAR system lies in its proprietary software architecture. By avoiding proprietary vendor software, STRIDE achieved total configuration flexibility and cost optimization, eliminating expensive external licensing models while ensuring the system remains completely sustainable and adaptable for future upgrades. Furthermore, its modular design allows for progressive integration with additional security layers, such as CCTV networks or automated alarms, without disrupting core operational logic.
A successful pilot deployment within an active Infrared Laboratory verified the system's operational reliability, demonstrating a significant reduction in administrative workload, minimized human error, and radically strengthened audit traceability. Beyond an institutional rollout across all STRIDE divisions , STAR’s scalable framework has vast commercial and defense potential. It serves as a highly adaptable blueprint for any controlled environment requiring rigorous governance and asset accountability, including medical laboratories, technical workshops, equipment storage depots, and high-security logistics facilities where maintaining operational readiness is mission-critical.
