DIVVCRN Air: Distributed Intelligent Drone-to-Drone Emergency Power Relay Network

DIVVCRN-Air is a distributed energy sharing architecture that enables autonomous drone swarms to cooperatively prevent battery related losses by intelligently redistributing electrical energy among drones. Unlike conventional drone operations, where each aircraft functions as an isolated energy system and must immediately return to base or perform an emergency landing when its battery becomes critically low, DIVVCRN-Air treats the swarm as a collaborative energy network capable of preserving missions and preventing crashes.

When a drone reaches a predefined low battery threshold, it transmits an emergency energy request to the swarm. An onboard energy management algorithm evaluates the remaining battery levels, locations, mission priorities, and flight capabilities of nearby drones to identify the most suitable energy donors. The system then selects the nearest safe landing area where the recipient drone and one or more donor drones autonomously rendezvous. After landing, the drones dock through standardized electrical connectors integrated into their airframes. Controlled by battery management systems and isolated DC-to-DC power electronics, donor drones transfer only the amount of energy required for the recipient to safely continue its mission or reach a charging station, while ensuring no donor drone is excessively depleted. Once charging is complete, the drones automatically disconnect and resume their assigned tasks.

The novelty of DIVVCRN-Air lies not in drone charging itself, but in transforming battery energy into a shared, intelligently managed network resource. Instead of relying on a single donor or requiring specialized charging infrastructure, the system enables multiple drones to cooperatively contribute energy based on real-time optimization. This distributed approach improves mission resilience, extends operational endurance, reduces equipment losses, and minimizes downtime without requiring every drone to return to a fixed charging location.

The system can be implemented using commercially available technologies, including autonomous navigation, precision landing, battery management systems, standardized docking interfaces, communication networks, and bidirectional DC power electronics. Manufacturing requires only modest modifications to existing drone platforms, making integration feasible for both new designs and future drone fleets.

DIVVCRN-Air has broad commercial and public-sector applications wherever drone reliability and operational continuity are critical. Potential markets include infrastructure inspection, precision agriculture, parcel delivery, search and rescue, disaster response, environmental monitoring, industrial surveying, border security, and defense. As autonomous drone swarms become increasingly common, DIVVCRN-Air provides a scalable and cost-effective method for improving mission success while reducing battery-related failures, transforming independent drones into a resilient cooperative aerial energy network.
