As the global energy transition accelerates, the demand for critical minerals—lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese—has created a paradox: the green revolution is currently dependent on environmentally damaging primary mining and vulnerable global supply chains. Nowhere is this challenge more acute than in Africa. Despite generating 3.4 million tonnes of electronic waste annually, less than 1% of the continent’s e-waste is formally recycled. Relithia Energy is solving this crisis by establishing Sub-Saharan Africa’s first integrated, industrial-scale battery and e-waste recycling facility.
Located in Nigeria’s industrial corridor, Relithia Energy utilizes a proprietary "Electro-Vacuummetallurgy" process that represents a quantum leap in recycling technology. Unlike traditional pyrometallurgical methods that rely on high-heat smelting—losing critical materials to slag and generating significant CO2—Relithia’s process operates at low temperatures with an 80% reduction in energy consumption. The system consists of two primary stages: Vacuum Thermal Stripping (VTS), which recovers 100% of electrolyte solvents, and Electrochemical Metal Recovery (EMR), which extracts battery-grade metals at 99%+ purity. This zero-wastewater, zero-direct-emission process allows for the recovery of seven distinct materials, including lithium hydroxide, cobalt sulfate, and nickel sulfate, directly returning them to the battery manufacturing supply chain.
Relithia’s unique value proposition lies in its dual-stream processing capability. By integrating Lithium-Ion battery recycling with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) processing, the facility achieves superior economic resilience. While battery recycling drives volume and secures the critical minerals needed for the EV and renewable storage sectors, the PCB line captures high-value precious metals such as gold, silver, and palladium. This "margin-stabilizing" model produces a blended gross margin of 48-52%, far exceeding the industry standard.
The strategic importance of this project cannot be overstated. Africa currently remains entirely dependent on imported battery materials while sitting on a "massive urban reserve" of lithium and cobalt locked inside discarded electronics. By processing these materials locally, Relithia creates a circular economy that reduces supply chain vulnerability for African manufacturers and mitigates the environmental catastrophe caused by informal recycling "open burning" practices.
Our Phase 1 pilot facility is designed for a capacity of 500kg/hour, with plans to scale to 25,000 tonnes annually by 2030. Backed by technical validation from the University of Pretoria and the Utah San Rafael Energy Research Center, Relithia Energy is led by a multidisciplinary team with deep expertise in chemical engineering and African industrial operations.
Relithia Energy is not just a recycling company; it is a critical infrastructure provider for the 21st century. By transforming toxic waste into the high-purity feedstocks required for the energy transition, we are ensuring that Africa is not merely a passive consumer of green technology, but an active, sustainable leader in the global clean energy supply chain. We are building the circular foundation upon which Africa’s sustainable future will rest.
