SynTec is a wearable concussion assessment system designed to make objective brain health screening more accessible in high-impact sports and other environments where early detection is critical. Concussions remain a major risk in sports such as American football, where many athletes continue playing while injured due to pressure to stay in the game, limited access to advanced diagnostic tools, and reliance on subjective sideline evaluations. When symptoms are missed or minimized, delayed care can increase the risk of further injury and prolong recovery.
SynTec addresses this gap by combining two complementary physiological assessment methods into a single portable headset: eye-tracking-based vestibular/ocular-motor testing and EEG-based brain activity monitoring. Traditional vestibular/ocular-motor screening often depends on a clinician visually observing a patient’s gaze response, which can introduce subjectivity. EEG can provide valuable neurological data, but it is often tied to expensive, clinical, or research-grade equipment. SynTec translates these methods into a more affordable, wearable, and intuitive format that can be used on the sidelines, in training facilities, clinics, or at home.
The headset uses inward-facing cameras to track gaze movement as the user follows controlled visual stimuli displayed through integrated AR-style optics. At the same time, five dry-contact EEG electrodes positioned at AF7, FP1, AFZ, FP2, and AF8 collect frontal brain activity data. By combining eye movement and brainwave information, SynTec creates a dual-layer assessment that can support more informed decisions about whether an athlete should continue play, seek further evaluation, or monitor recovery over time.
The product is designed around ease of use during high-stress situations. A semi-rigid internal frame helps maintain consistent electrode and camera placement, while a flexible outer shell, foam padding, and adjustable arms improve comfort and fit across a wide range of users. A proximity sensor automatically activates the system when worn, and the user can begin the scan through a companion mobile application with minimal setup. The full assessment is designed to take approximately 15 minutes.
The mobile app is intended to translate complex EEG and eye-tracking data into clear visual feedback for athletes, parents, coaches, caregivers, and medical staff. In addition to a single assessment, the system can help track recovery progress over multiple sessions, showing whether results are improving, worsening, or remaining consistent. Optional baseline calibration can further improve comparison for individual athletes.
SynTec’s innovation lies not in replacing medical professionals, but in expanding access to objective screening tools before, during, and after potential injury. By combining clinically established assessment principles with a low-cost hardware approach, wearable form factor, and user-centered interaction, SynTec supports safer participation in sport and offers a pathway toward more decentralized, preventative brain health monitoring.
