LensLife is a future contact lens care system that can be designed to help users know exactly when it is time to replace their contact lenses. Millions of contact lens wearers particularly those who use monthly disposable lenses only occasionally, struggle to remember when a lens was first opened. This often results in lenses being worn beyond their recommended replacement period increasing the risk of discomfort, reduced visual performance and eye infections.
LensLife envisions a biocompatible contact lens solution incorporating next generation smart sensing materials capable of detecting cumulative changes in the contact lens caused by aging, repeated wear, cleaning cycles and deposit buildup. When a lens is immersed in the solution, the sensing material would temporarily change color to communicate the lens's overall condition.
Proposed visual indicator:
- Green – Lens is in good condition.
- Yellow – Lens is approaching its recommended replacement period.
- Red – Lens should be replaced.
Unlike smartphone reminders or manual date tracking, LensLife provides feedback as part of the normal lens cleaning routine, requiring no electronics, batteries or user input. The concept is particularly valuable for occasional contact lens users, who often lose track of replacement schedules because their lenses are not worn daily.
Although significant research and development would be required to create safe, biocompatible sensing chemistry, future advances in smart polymers, ophthalmic materials and chemical sensing technologies could make this concept feasible. By transforming contact lens care into an intuitive self-monitoring process, LensLife has the potential to improve replacement compliance, enhance eye health, reduce preventable complications and redefine the future of vision care.
