Millions of people lose the ability to enjoy recreational fishing independently due to stroke, limb loss, neurological conditions, arthritis and reduced upper limb function. Conventional fishing reels require two-handed operation, while existing electric reels are typically designed for offshore fishing and are often too expensive, heavy and impractical for everyday use.

RapidReel is an adaptive electric retrieval system that converts a standard fixed-spool fishing reel into an electrically assisted reel without permanently modifying the original equipment. A compact geared motor drives the reel through a precision timing belt, allowing line retrieval at the press of a button while retaining full manual operation whenever required.

The lightweight modular design can be powered by either an internal 9V lithium battery for portability or an external rechargeable battery for extended fishing sessions. The control switch can be positioned to suit the individual user's physical abilities, making the system adaptable for a wide range of disabilities. An optional support harness further increases independence for users with limited arm strength or one-handed function.

RapidReel has progressed beyond the prototype stage and is already being used by disabled anglers in the UK and internationally. The design uses commercially available motors, belts, bearings and electronic components combined with additively manufactured parts, providing an affordable, reliable and scalable solution for future production.

More than a fishing accessory, RapidReel is assistive technology that restores independence, confidence and inclusion. It enables stroke survivors, amputees and people with reduced dexterity to return to a hobby that supports physical wellbeing, mental health and social connection. By adapting existing equipment instead of replacing it, RapidReel demonstrates how practical engineering can remove barriers, improve accessibility and make outdoor recreation available to more people.
