Shear Thickening Fluid (STF) impregnated kevlar is known for its stab resistant nature and is used as Liquid Body Armour reducing the number of kevlar sheets in the ordinary body armour and making it puncture resistant with high degree of flexibility . Other fabrics such as nylon ,cut-tex , etc. can be also be used with STF impregnation as animal handling and bite resistant clothing .

Shear thickening fluid is one in which viscosity increases with the rate of shear strain due to formation of hydro-clusters. Impregnation of STF in fabrics such as kevlar has increased its ballistic impact characteristics and introduced stab resistance.

An estimated 7,000 to 8,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the United States each year. Wood gatherers ,hikers, veterinarian etc. have a high risk of being attacked by poisonous snakes ,spiders, porcupine etc.either while handling or by surprise. Protective clothing for handling and avoiding such animal attacks are available , such as thick leather gloves with kevlar sheets or stainless steel mesh to provide bite resistance.

The disadvantage with ordinary protective clothing such as gloves made of kevlar or cut-tex is the large number of sheets used to provide cut or puncture resistance ,thus sacrificing dexterity and comfort . By impregnating a fabric much cheaper than kevlar or cut-tex with shear thickening fluid ,not only the number of sheets used can be reduced , also flexibility and puncture resistance can be increased thus increasing tactical ability of the wearer.

STF impregnated fabrics can also be worn by hikers to protect against thorns ,surprise attacks by snakes, spiders, scorpions etc.
