Smart Traffic Signal Display System for Real-Time Road User Awareness

Traditional traffic lights provide limited information to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists — primarily relying on red, yellow, and green indicators. As traffic becomes more complex and multi-modal, there is a growing need for dynamic, high-visibility displays that communicate richer information at intersections that could improve safety, particularly for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Smart Traffic Signal Display System introduces a revolutionary improvement: an integrated LED display array, similar to a flat-panel television, embedded within traffic signal structures. This dynamic display system provides real-time countdown timers, visual cues, pedestrian crossing graphics, bicyclist presence icons, and even customized graphical alerts to dramatically enhance situational awareness at intersections. Also mounted on the traffic signal structure is a flashing Hi-Brightness LED beacon to further alert drivers of signal changes and to mitigate red-light runners, improving intersection safety and compliance.

This invention is protected under U.S. Patent No. US10600319 B1.

In addition to traditional signal lights, the system delivers (See attached drawing):

  • Countdown timers, both digital (numerical) and analog, for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to anticipate signal changes.
  • Graphical alerts showing the presence of pedestrians, bicyclists, or crossing traffic.
  • Custom messaging during special events such as accident ahead, emergency vehicle approaches, or active school crossings.
  • Red-Light Runner Mitigation: A high Brightness LED beacon flashes to warn speeding vehicles. If a red-light violation is detected, the system holds all intersection signals red until the area is clear, preventing collisions and improving intersection safety.

The system integrates seamlessly with vehicle and pedestrian detection sensors, pedestrian buttons, and connected infrastructure to present context-sensitive information, improving decision-making for all road users. For example, when a pedestrian or bicyclist approaches an intersection corner, a graphical alert immediately appears, making them visible to approaching drivers, and prompting greater caution.

Key features include:

  • High-Visibility LED Displays: Durable, energy-efficient, and visible in all lighting conditions, including direct sunlight.
  • Flexible Configuration: Timers, graphics, and messages are fully programmable to meet local needs and seasonal adjustments.
  • Sensor-Driven Operation: Context-specific triggers based on real-time detection from radar, infrared, or video-based sensors.
  • Power Options: Solar-powered or grid-tied for maximum flexibility and sustainability.
  • Standard Compatibility: Interfaces with existing traffic controller units, communications protocols, and cabinet infrastructure.

By improving visibility, reducing confusion, and enhancing compliance, the Smart Traffic Signal Display System transforms intersections into safer, smarter environments. Studies show that countdown timers alone can reduce red-light violations by up to 50% — combining them with real-time alerts, visual messaging, and responsive displays promises even greater safety gains.

This system also provides a powerful platform for integrating future Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications, aligning with smart city initiatives, connected vehicles, and next generation autonomous mobility.

The ability to deliver detailed, actionable information precisely when and where it’s needed marks a major evolution in traffic control technology — one that can save lives, optimize traffic flow, and create a more adaptable, resilient transportation ecosystem.

The future of safer intersections starts with smarter signals.
