MODRIVE is an innovative electric motor designed to eliminate permanent magnets and mechanical gearboxes. It achieves high torque at low rotational speeds, making it ideal for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and direct-drive generators.
The design includes a circular stator housing 12 transformer-based modules. Each module uses a U-shaped core with primary windings on the lateral legs and a DC-excited middle leg. As the external rotor rotates, its smooth edge closes magnetic paths by sequentially connecting the transformer poles, creating strong electromagnetic coupling without brushes or slip rings.
MODRIVE’s rotor has 47 rectangular teeth on its inner diameter and 8 radial holes for mass reduction and balance. The absence of rare-earth magnets reduces cost and environmental impact. Its modularity allows for custom configurations and easy manufacturing.
Key benefits include:
- High torque at low RPM without needing a gearbox
- No magnets, reducing cost and dependence on rare earths
- Scalable architecture for various sizes and power ranges
- Suitable for EVs, elevators, linear drives, and wind turbines
MODRIVE combines principles of transformer electromagnetics with mechanical switching via rotor geometry, resulting in a quiet, durable, and efficient drive solution. It opens new possibilities in direct-drive systems where space, reliability, and torque density are critical
