Self-Contained Rescue Spreader System

A self-contained rescue spreader system (SCRSS or Jaws of Life) eliminates the auxiliary power unit and hydraulic hoses of contemporary systems is proposed. The system has a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder engine integrated with reciprocating hydraulic pumps, composite arms with hardened steel tips, and a fuel tank integrated into the rear handle. Our 25 lb SCRSS can sell for $10~$15k to directly compete against contemporary systems weighing more than 66 lb just for the spreader-cutter.
Contemporary Rescue Spreader Systems (RSSs) are very heavy and are composed of:
1.A stationary engine/hydraulic pump power unit,
2.High pressure, hydraulic fluid via hoses, and
3.The hand held cutter/spreader.

Our SCRSS will replace the following items that are sold separately:
Rescue spreaders: $4,500 to $6,000
Hydraulic hose reels with 100 ft of hose: $2,150
5 HP high pressure hydraulic power units: $3,700 to $4,800
Total System Cost: $10,350 to $12,950

Typically a 5 horsepower gasoline engine operates a hydraulic pump that provide high pressure (5,000 psi) fluid to the Rescue Cutter/Spreader actuator using hydraulic lines that may be expensive, unwieldy, and, if cut, have the potential to spray high pressure fluids in the eyes of rescuers. As an alternative, we propose to develop an improved Self-Contained Rescue Spreader System (SCRSS) that completely integrates the power generation and actuator systems into a single device. Further weight savings will be achieved through the use of composite jaws. By taking this approach, we will greatly simplify and lighten the device. The proposed 2-stroke engine and high-pressure hydraulic pump shown in the figure.
The system has a twin 35cc 2-stroke engine integrated with reciprocating hydraulic pumps, composite arms with hardened steel tips, a 2” hydraulic cylinder with a 6” stroke, and a fuel tank integrated into the rear handle.
When completed the lightweight Self-Contained Rescue Spreader System (SCRSS) will have the following performance goals:
1.15,000 lbf force over a 12” stroke with a 20% duty cycle.
2.Stroke time of less than 15 seconds under full load.
3.Operable in water and washable to remove blood.
4.20 minutes of operation between refueling.
5.Total package (including power unit) weighing less than 25 lbs.
