CryoRAC: An Innovative Cryogenic Air Conditioner

CryoRAC is a proposed design for an innovative air conditioning system that works on radiative cooling utilizing cryogenic liquids. The radiation mode of heat transfer is an easier method of cooling compared to convection mode as in the traditional air conditioner. Radiative cooling provides preferential cooling for hotter objects. In comfort air conditioning, this system avoids bringing down the temperature of other objects than humans and other living beings. This is depicted in the figure uploaded. The system can be implemented using a liquid nitrogen-filled cryostat and the vaporized nitrogen can be reliquefied using a small cryocooler. Though the capital cost would be higher when compared to traditional air conditioners, the improvement in the cooling efficiency is expected to reduce the overall energy consumption.
