This is a prop speed reduction gearbox I designed and built for an LS1 V8 engine. I needed to reduce the nose weight to move the aircraft's CG back. I was also motivated to reduce the overall powerplant weight, to get it under the existing certified 6 cylinder opposed engines. I chose to use carbon fiber as the structural housing material to do this. Typical similar gearboxes weigh 80 to 120 lbs, this one is 36 lbs, with four gears, full ball and taper roller bearing design, pressure fed oiling and dry sumped to reduce drag and oil heating.
