Modern fabrication techniques permit manufacture of economical personnel and package security scanners integrating traditional metal detection with high-resolution ultrasound imaging of dense materials, such as explosives, concealed in clothing or small packages.

This scanner can be manufactured using present semiconductor fabrication methods, and provides flexibility in routing and display of acquired images for collaborative examination at remote locations.

Presently deployed systems for security imaging are large, expensive, fixed installations with significant power requirements, providing whole-body images susceptible to abuse, and undesirable doses of electromagnetic radiation to subjects being scanned.

The concept proposed provides a lightweight, portable, low-power solution for rapid screening of personnel and packages without exposure to millimeter-wave radiation, or potential misuse of full-body images acquired through clothing.
