A Braking Mechanism for Retarding Clutch Shaft Speed of an Off-Road Vehicle

As we know, when we start the engine, power from the engine is transmitted through a fly wheel clutch, drive shaft, gear box, final drive, rear axle and finally reaches the rear wheels to drive our vehicle. We need different speeds for different applications, for that we have provided a gear box but when we engage the gear there is always a clashing noise in off-road vehicles (like tractors, earth-movers, etc.) which is quite unpleasant for the user.

The actual reason for the clashing of gears is that whenever we press the clutch pedal, the driving shaft gets disengaged from the flywheel but it continues to rotate due to inertia. As a result when we try to engage the gear by shifting the lever it clashes with the gear on driving shaft and generates clashing sound. This can be easily avoided if we are able to retard or stop the drive shaft as soon as the clutch pedal is pressed so that engagement of gear takes place smoothly. Here I have an idea to provide a special breaking mechanism which will bring the freely rotating drive shaft to rest as soon the clutch pedal and gear shift lever is actuated. The subsequent diagram shows the mechanism of such braking system. Here two sensors are mounted each on clutch pedal and gear shifter which sense their actuation. When the user tries to shift the gear then he presses the clutch. These two simultaneous motions are sensed by sensor which activates the brake pad connected to disc mounted on the drive shaft and brings the drive shaft to rest. This way the noise during engaging of gear to drive shaft can be minimised and also enhance the life of gears.
