Today we are familiar with the hybrid concept in four wheelers. It has a advantage of fuel saving, low pollution. But why not in two wheelers? Here it is. The Hybrid Bike. It is combination of regular IC engine powered bike+electric bike. Also the provision to eliminate the external charging is also there. The parts are electric BLDC hub motor, alternator, bevel gear train, Li-Ion battery to store the electrical energy generated through alternator & regular bike.

The alternator is attached to the rear wheel through a bevel gear train, BLDC hub motor is within the rear wheel as shown. The connections are as shown. So when the bike is running on a highway we want high speed, so we run the bike on an IC engine. While running as alternator is coupled to rear wheel through bevel gear, the part of energy of the rear wheel is taken out to charge the alternator. As energy is multiplied by using a gear train the alternator generates the electric energy. This energy is stored in Li-Ion battery.

When we arrive in the city because of low traffic speed excess idling of engine takes place, which leads to loss of fuel plus pollution takes place. So here is the way to eliminate the hazardous effects of IC engine. Switch on bike to electric mode switch off the engine. Electric bike has no disadvantage of pollution, part throttle operation. Here we have combined the advantages of both IC engine & electric bike. Also their disadvantages are eliminated. Advantage of IC engine is high speed. But disadvantage is High pollution, poor performance at part throttle. Advantages of electric bike are ZERO POLLUTION, can operate at part throttle. But disadvantages are low speed, requires external charging, limited range. But by using an alternator we have eliminated these disadvantages. Using an IC engine on highways where high speed is demanded we also solved the low speed problem of electric bike.

Lets have a look at the results. Pollutants saved by using electric mode are:
CO=162.5 gm
HC=97.5 gm
NOx=0.75 gm
Particulate matter=5.75 gm

The kilometers are 25 km as the range of electric bike is 25 km per charge. We can increase the range by increasing the no of batteries or increasing battery capacity. To charge the battery through an IC engine it takes only 450 ml of fuel. The fuel requirement can be decreased by using a gear train with different speed ratio. We can increase the load capacity by increasing motor capacity. Plus we are getting range extension by using an alternator. So these are the advantages of the hybrid bike.
