My idea is for a tethered electric powered UAV with coaxial rotors that could be made in various sizes and powered by the ground through the tether so it stay up for days at a time.
The UAV would primarily be used by ships to look over the horizon and use passive sensors to look for targets such as periscopes,ships,and land targets far inland too.
They could also be used to send laser communications with direct line of sight to other ships.The advantage of a tethered UAV would be jam proof and hack proof transmission of data to surface ships and unlimited power supplied from base ship
Larger models could even lift a radar array to provide AEW capability...they could be used like low cost back ups to satellite communications or airborne AEW in the event of jamming or severe weather
