Performance analysis of a inclined solar still with baffles for fresh water production

This work presents the experimental performance analysis of a inclined solar still with baffles for fresh water production. Several researchers make many configurations in solar still for enhancing the fresh water production. On the economic aspect the solar still were costly so that it didn't reached the end users. In this work the utilization of waste materials a inclined solar still was designed and fabricated. Various experiments were conducted on the solar still and the fresh water production was found to be 5.1 kg/m2 day. This is normally higher than conventional solar still with is about 2.2-2.5 kg/m2 day of fresh water.

A solar still with a basin area of 0.65*0.65 m2 was fabricated. The height of the solar still was maintained to be 0.1m for avoiding the shadow effect which normally falls from the side walls to the water area. The consecutive distance between each baffle plates were measured to be 0.13m. The zig-zag motion of the water covers the entire surface area of the basin by absorbing the heat, which in turns increasing the water temperature.

From the experiments conducted the influence of baffle plates increased the temperature of inlet temperature of saline water from 32 degrees to 72 degrees in the outlet. The average temperature of water flowing throughout the system was maintained at 58 degrees. The temperature difference between water and glass acts as a driving force for fresh water production. And the average temperature difference found to be 18 degrees, which is higher than Dunkle's model on conventional solar still. The average outlet water temperature collected in the storage tank is about 72-74 degrees.

The baffles which are placed absorbs the solar radiation and which allows the water to heat for further high temperature. The placing of baffles increases the contact time of water with solar intensity than other inclined solar still.
