Motorcycle Stabilizion System

The purpose of this invention is to automatically stabilize a two wheeled motorbike or scooter as it starts off, comes to a stop or is parked. The rider does not have to remove his/her feet from the foot rests as he/she approaches traffic lights or stops to park the bike, or has to manoeuvre at low speed in stop & go traffic

The hazard of losing control of the bike in traffic is reduced for inexperienced operators especially if the bike is heavy compared to the weight of the operator.

The automatic nature of this stabilization system improves the safety of bike operation.

A control system senses the slowing of the bike and deploys two independent struts, one on each side of the bike. The control system senses the tilt of the bike and independently adjusts each strut so as to maintain the vertical orientation of the bike. The struts are deployed by an electric powered screw mechanism, and have small wheels on the ends to make contact with the pavement. When the rider resumes his/her journey, the control system senses the increasing speed and retracts the struts.

The strut system replaces the kick-stand that motor bikes are equipped with. When the operator wishes to park the bike he/she simple locks the brakes. The struts keep the bike upright. The system consumes no energy while the struts are deployed or retracted.

The operator controls the use of the system using a switch with four-positions:
OFF – the system is non-functional.
MANUAL UP – the struts are locked in the retracted position.
MANUAL DOWN – the struts are locked in the deployed position with the bike in the upright position.
AUTO – the struts are deployed or retracted as needed, automatically, as described.

The market consists of aging "boomers" and Scooter Rental Agencies that rent to many inexperienced and unskilled riders. The proliferation of three-wheeled motorcycles in the marketplace, with their increased stability during low-speed manoeuvres, is the industry's response to the increasing need for more stable products. The invention is cheaper by an order of magnitude than the three-wheeled alternative.

The public good is served by enabling seniors to continue to ride their motorbikes safely and by making motorbikes and scooters a practical means of transportation for people for whom they presently are not.
