A regenerative braking system is a system in which the power is generated through friction energy while applying brakes which otherwise would be lost to the environment. In this system, an electric motor that normally drives a hybrid or pure electric vehicle is essentially operated in reverse (electrically) during braking or coasting. Instead of consuming energy to propel a vehicle, the motor acts as a generator that charges the on-board batteries with electric energy that would normally be lost as heat through traditional mechanical friction brakes.

In this system the heat and kinetic energy is being converted into electrical energy with the help of generator. The amount of energy which is been produced with the help of generator thus stored into a battery. The stored energy can be further used for the better performance and efficiency of the vehicle. Thus accompanying friction arms to the normal brake pads in overcoming inertia and help in slow down the vehicle.

Practical investigation of a regenerative braking system shows about 35% saving in fuel consumption. It lowers operating and environment costs of a vehicle and should make it more efficient.

Since my school days, I have been interested in Mathematics and physics. Unscrewing the toys and observing the interior parts of it was my hobby. I have grown up making wacky models out of the motors where I dwelled with.
The field of Mechanical engineering has always fascinating me. The reason for choosing Mechanical Engineering was not a hasty decision but my interest started developing in the early stage of my life, when I studied about the invention of cycle, moreover about its advantages and the transformation of mechanical power to every part of the cycle enticed me to know about the factors that are responsible for many inventions. I was taken aback after seeing the engine parts of my dad’s vehicle Honda Splendour for the first time in my life, furthermore when it came to my knowledge that this small engine runs thousands of kilometres, it really became impossible for me to believe, “Engine Piston” was the answer I received, but couldn’t penetrate the fundamentals of it. I am of firm conviction that suitable opportunity to pursue graduate studies will help in my endeavour towards realizing my goal, paving the path for self-actualization and hence my desire to this project .
