1.) NATURE OF TECHNOLOGY/PRODUCT:The Nigam’s Mechanism acts as an extension to the current state-of-the-art motors used in electric vehicles. The Nigam’s Mechanism consists of an extended pair of pipes connected to the inside edges of tires which are further connected to a strong bar magnet with a steep gradient between its poles and mid-point. This bar magnet is enclosed in a special multi-layered crossed (so as to produce D.C. current) spherical copper coil to increase the net amount of flux changes taking place due to the rotating magnet thereby increasing the efficiency of the product. The copper coil is connected to the battery via a reversed-biased Zener Diode attached in series.

WORKING: When a car is in motion, the bar magnet rotates simultaneously in the coil thereby producing an EMF which is in turn used to charge the battery. At lower speeds (or at rest), when the EMF of the coil is insufficient to charge the battery, Zener Diode comes into play by preventing the flow of current from the battery to the coil thus preventing the battery from short-circuiting.

2.) MARKET NEED and POTENTIAL IMPACT: Of the 1 billion motor cars plying on streets worldwide, the electric cars hold a share of only 2 per cent. Although the cost of operation of electric cars is cheaper than the gasoline ones, some of its cons such as ‘Limited Range,’ ‘Long Refueling Time,’ and ‘Higher Cost of Manufacturing (mainly due to a large set of batteries)’ compel the buyer to opt for a gasoline car. The regenerative action of the Nigam’s mechanism due to its coupled rotating magnetic coil with the battery by far nearly eliminates the current constraints. Due to its regenerative action the discharging time of the battery increases approximately (by theoretical calculations) from 1.5 to 2.5 times. This eliminates the concept of ‘Limited Range,’ 'Longer Refuelling Time’ and also lessens the burden on manufacturers who can now use a small battery for a larger application.

The regenerative action of the Nigam’s Mechanism is essentially a step towards sustainable energy resources as it increases the discharge time of batteries, thereby reducing their dependence on electric ports for charging. The reduced consumption of electricity of millions of electric cars will not only cut the consumption of fossil fuels in vehicles but also reduce their consumption at the electricity generation station.

3.) EASE OF MANUFACTURABILITY, MARKETABILITY and TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION: Nigam’s Mechanism can act as an extension to complement the already existing design of electric motors and battery designs thereby attracting minimum cost for the manufacturers in its incorporation. As stated above Nigam’s Mechanism eliminates multifarious disadvantages associated with electric vehicles thereby providing a major boost to the slowly growing EV sector.

Although the major impact of Nigam’s Mechanism is in the field of electric vehicles it is not limited to it. Nigam’s Mechanism can be incorporated into any machine which has a rotating part and works on a battery. The regenerative action of Nigam’s Mechanism acts as a boon to any such machine. It can be seamlessly incorporated in a number of appliances such as electrical (battery operated) fans, portable electronic pumps, and generators to name a few.
