A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) is a screening test used to examine cells from the cervix and the vagina. (The cervix is the portion of the uterus that protrudes into the vagina). Cervical and vaginal cells are studied to determine whether there is evidence of cancer or pre-cancerous changes. If abnormal cells are found, they are classified according to their degree of abnormality. Most abnormal Pap smears are caused by cervical infections or inflammation which can usually be successfully treated before leading to cancer.
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. In 2018, an estimated 570 000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 311 000 women died from the disease. Pap smear is perceived by the medical community as a reliable screening tool to help detect cervical cancer, along with regular pelvic exams. Approximately 50 million Pap smears are performed each year only in the United States.
For a PAP smear test, cytobrush is used to scrape off the tissue from cervix and this sample is sent to a pathology lab for further slide preparation and microscopy. Standard microscope is used to view tissue and cells are counted manually. This can sometimes result in human error and overlapped cells may go unnoticed. Also, it consumes lot of time which results in delayed report given to patients. To solve this issue, we bring an app i.e. Digi-PAP wherein we can scan the slide and get the report of Pap smear test within few seconds. You will have to Connect portable microscope to your smartphone. You can also use standard microscope and do additional setting in your phone to capture tissue’s image. One can capture picture and get report immediately or use already saved picture to get the report. The cells of captured image are grouped in 7 classes based on their size and shape. This screening segregates overlapped cells, avoiding error generally encountered by humans. These reports can be saved in pdf format for future reference. This even helps to check for any improvement in the condition of patient. The app is simple and easy to use. Patient themselves can also keep a track of their health by creating a user profile wherein they can have access to all the screening test. This proves to be a very powerful tool and helps get accurate test results.
