884 million people lack access to safe water supply. This is approximately one in eight people. Half of the world's hospitalizations are due to water-related diseases. 3.575 million people die each year from water related disease. Water also leads to other problems in sanitation, economics and overall quality of life.

Even though the world is abundant in water, only 1% of water is drinkable. In addition, the percentage of safe drinkable water is constantly decreasing, due to pollution. Most of the water on this planet is ocean water and is undrinkable. There are various ways to increase the percentage of drinking water, yet many of the ways are not economical. One economical way to increase drinkable water supply is through nanotechnology.

By inserting nanoparticles such as silver, palladium or iron into contaminated water, the metals react with the contaminants and forms safer molecules. These nanoparticles can be used to purify dangerous chemicals and bacteries. They can be inserted into wells and groundwater to purify them. In addition, a nanoparticle filter can be placed on a pump, to filter the water as it passes through the pump.

Nanotechnology offers a better solution over other purification system, for example it is not as energy intensive as reverse osmosis and desalination. Through the nanoparticle filtration method ocean water can be purified into drinking water.

The nanoparticle water cleanser will lead to not only cleaner water but also help solve the various problems related to lack of a clean water supply. The nanoparticle filtration method will lead to increased sanitation, less disease, better lifestyle and a cleaner environment.
