The Hyperion solar array would be a constellation of transpolar satellites equipped with retractable reflective dishes. When deployed, the dishes redirect sunlight toward any asteroid or comet that threatens the Earth. The redirected sunlight can be used in many ways. The primary purpose being the study and destruction of metiors and comets that threaten Earth.
Unfocused light can illuminate the near side of objects, allowing scientists and engineers to better gauge their size and topography. When focused, the solar energy can be used to super heat a localized point of the object. Scientists and engineers can then use spectrum analysis to determine the chemical composition of the object.
If enough solar energy were focused on an object its internal temperature could be increased such that it would explode, thus rendering the trajectory of the majority of the objects mass harmless.
