The Reciprocating type Internal Combustion engines have been serving the world and boosting the automobiles since last 150 years. A lot of advancements in this field have occurred till now to increase and optimize its performance. But the constraint with respect to the space in the engine compartment of an automobile has unfortunately put a stop to this optimization. Engineers are trying to improve the technologies with a limitation to the space available in the engine compartment of a vehicle.
A ‘DUAL-POWER ENGINE’ is completely a new type of engine that possesses the capability to provide a large amount of increment in the power output, net torque, the acceleration and the overall speed of the vehicle as compared to the conventional engines within the limits of space constraints in a vehicle.
A Dual Power engine consists of a double acting cylinder instead of a conventional single acting cylinder. In more elaborative words, in this type of engine fuel will enter from both sides of the piston (can be of equal quantity from either sides or unequal). Thus it will have two work producing chambers inside the cylinder viz Upper chamber and lower chamber (upper chamber being located on the upper side of piston and lower chamber on the other side considering the engine to be vertical). Thus it will differ from construction point of view as compared to conventional engine which is described in further sections. The unique feature of this type of engine that is responsible for the high output is the occurrence of two consecutive power strokes in a single cycle.
The term ‘Dual Power’ has been given so because theoretically if equal quantities of volume of fuel (say V+V=2V) is supplied to the cylinder from both sides and if this is compared with conventional engine which allows V volume of fuel to enter , then the former produces theoretically double power then the latter one. But of course there are several factors that will not let the power to get exactly double but close to it.
From performance point of view, a dual-power engine will produce theoretically double power, double torque, double acceleration, same efficiency and same fuel consumption as compare to an equivalent conventional engine.
For Four-wheelers, the work of four cylinders( generally used) can be done with two cylinders thus making the whole engine much compact. Although there might be a little increase in the longitudinal length of the cylinder but that will get compensated with the decrement in the overall reduction of the engine. There might also have a positive effect on the fuel-efficiency of the vehicle as the mechanical losses involved earlier in four piston-connecting rod-crank sets will get reduced to exactly half.And keeping the four cylinders and then using this concept in each of the cylinder will in turn increase the acceleration of the vehicle.
