The proposed device consists of a standard shock absorber equipped with a pneumatic cylinder working at high air/gas pressure, able to quickly modify the vehicle clearance on all suspension rides, indifferent of load state, so easy transforming the car in a sport car on speed road, decreasing the clearance or in off-road one increasing it.
Function desire, the actuator can work with a suspension spring with increased flexibility, comparative to the standard vehicle spring, or without spring, reducing the cost. High forces permit it to adjust vehicle trim, easy-going (Table 1) or in real time (Table 2), realizing an active suspension with increased stability, comfort, passing capacity, handling, cruise speed and active security, reducing the risk of undercarriage damage.
The novelty is to create a controllable buoyant force under the damper dust shield, by replacing it with a pneumatic cylinder and sliding closing the area between it and outer cylinder and filling it with compressed gas/air at proper pressure.
Comparative to the known solution realize with rubber sleeve/bellows the new proposed solution is more compact, reliable and resistant at high pressure
The proposed actuators cost is less than $200/ 2 pieces comparative with the known solution realized with sleeve/bellows costing $ 1000/ 2 pieces.
The proposed trim corrector, may be applied on any kind of new or worn shock absorber/ strut, having applicability on each vehicle kind including motorcycles, cars, buses, trucks, trains, military and racing vehicles, improving performances, comfort and active and passive safety.
So the new devices serve the first assembly, or aftermarket, or artisanal in vehicle services.
The market potential refer up to 100% for the SUV, light trucks, buses, trucks, high class cars, military and off road vehicles, to eliminate the disadvantages produced by high load variation, bad roads, but the same for speed and racing vehicles adjusting the body-ground clearance to the optimal values and thus improving the aerodynamic coefficient and stability.
The Table 1 show how realize shock absorber with pneumatic cylindrical actuator, using a standard damper and apply some minor modifications, presented below:
1. replace the standard dust shield with a pneumatic cylinder
2. apply an annular body on the outer cylinder; the annular body containing one or more channels with one or more seal elements, sliding sealing on the inner surface of the cylinder
3. seal cylinder against rod with a gasket
4. apply an air filling valve on the pneumatic cylinder and connect it to a pressure air source
5. adjust manually or automatically the vehicle trim, by modifying the gas/air pressure
The manufacture can be realized in shock absorbers factories, or in more or less specialized workshops.
The two artisanal samples realized with aftermarket dampers were tested in laboratory and on road, results being presented in Table 3
Comparative with products already in the marketplace, the new products will have the prices 3 ÷ 5 times less and increased performances, similar to the active suspensions.
