Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes—that's one person every 48 minutes in 2017. These deaths have fallen by a third in the last three decades; however, drunk-driving crashes claim more than 10,000 lives per year. It is surprising to see this problem being very serious worldwide in this time where the technology reached at its peak more than ever and still no reliable solution has been developed. This will lead us to ask “what makes spotting of drivers who are under influence of alcohol hard?” Usually drunk drivers are caught when they have been in an accident big or small. At this time it is no point because the accident already happened and the damage is already done. So we need to create a mechanism where it is easy for road officer like traffic control personnel spot and track drunk drivers before they become cause of accident and also become victims of car accident that usually is fetal. This project will achieve this specific problem by providing a mechanism that will help road officer notice when there is alcohol smell inside a certain vehicle.
This project is about building electrical system that is installed in vehicle that will change the ordinary front and back light of car into noticeable different color while maintaining the visual safety to drive at any time when there is alcohol influenced driver in the car. This is done by combining odor sensor that notice when there is smell of alcohol in the car with electrical switching system that will be activated when the sensor signals the circuit to change from the current color into similar color that can be identified but still function safely for driving at any time. This will enable law enforcers spot the car easily to make sure the person who has alcohol in their body isn’t the one driving the car. The electrical system can be installed in the car in a way that the drivers can’t remove it without disabling the lighting system of the car. The system has very small mechanism and doesn’t add big cost and comparing to the lives it can save it will be one of the best mechanisms of the decade. The current electrical system basically have a battery that supply electric power to the mechanism, fuse connecting the switch and the battery, switch that turn on and off at will of the driver, the indicator that shows the status of the switch, the driving lights and the accessories. The current electrical mechanism concerning the front and rear light can be described as the diagram number one and the new electrical system consisting of the alcohol smell sensor integrated with the current system is shown in diagram.
There are also designs that have odor sensors that focus on driver area but it really do not work 100 percent because the system fails when there is wind factor that will trigger false positive and false negative.
