Code Blue MedTech - Affordable, portable, easy-to-use, autonomous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation (AED) device that bystanders use to save the life of a patient in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and increases the odds of survival of out-of-hospital SCA from 5% to 31%.

Heart disease remains the #1 global cause of death with 17.3 million deaths each year, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030. Heart disease accounts for 1 in 3 deaths in the US.

According to the AHA, more than 350,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital SCA in the US every year and 95% of the victims die before reaching the hospital. SCA kills 1,000 people a day or 1 person every 2 minutes. Brain death starts to occur 4 to 6 minutes after someone experiences SCA if no CPR and AED occurs during that time.

The problems are several: lack of bystander CPR training; lack of bystander location awareness; bystander suffering emotional distress; provider fatigue; no hospital nearby; poor quality CPR performed by medics.

The Code Blue integrated system self-activates and incorporates robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), telecommunications module and life-saving components that autonomously performs critical functions. The systems controller would make all the components communicate seamlessly, avoiding the need for duplicate diagnostics while allowing for a more compact fabrication. Components include a medical backboard with straps, a systems controller, a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, a wireless tablet, a built-in cellular and GNSS/GSM/GPRS/A-GPS enabled module, a robotic arm with actuator for CPR application, an AED, a blood pressure monitor, a scale, an oxygen tank for ½ hour of therapy, a pulse oximeter, a thermometer, and an electrocardiogram monitor.

Once a bystander opens Code Blue and releases the wireless tablet – cyber-physical systems will be initialized. Using the built-in module, the system will automatically call 911, provide the precise location of where the emergency is taking place and the status and vitals of the patient. The more specific information that EMS and the hospital can get prior to attending the victim, the better prepared they will be to deal with the emergency. A voice channel is also established automatically.

Code Blue’s robotic CPR arm, would be anchored in the medical backboard. The magnetic chest press, which is a component of the automated CPR, is attached to the backboard’s belt straps and is to be positioned on person according to the position guide diagram on backboard. The actuator locks to the magnetic chest press and would be programmed to apply 125 lbs. of compression with 2” of pressure at a rate of 120 compressions per minute. It would be programmed to stop CPR application and start the AED according to the Basic Life Support algorithm.

Code Blue is portable, and stored folded and pre-assembled in a clearly marked location (similar to existing AEDs and fire extinguishers). It would self-diagnose and it would be continuously plugged into an electric outlet.
