POTENTIAL CANCER TREATMENT WORTHY OF INVESTIGATION

Purpose: The purpose of this suggested research is two-fold: (1) To find an effective treatment for breast cancer, and; (2) find a treatment method less debilitating than chemotherapy, or at least a supplementary procedure to chemotherapy that reduces debilitating effects. This suggested preliminary research is within the scope of undergraduate projects and affordable within small grants budgets.

Targeted Acetone Poisoning

Acetone occurs naturally in the body, and is metabolized by the liver. Excessive amounts of acetone can cause acetone poisoning, a condition called ketoacidosis. Type II diabetics sometimes develop Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemia. Patients with DKA have marked fluid and electrolyte deficits, which inhibit cell function, and death can result in acute cases.

Preventing the spread of the flu or the common cold is a perennial unsolved problem for the general public. In the US alone, there are upwards of 49,000 lives lost each year (depending on type of flu that year) and untold loss of productivity from millions of sick individuals. The development of a new system - Breathe Safe - answers this major problem. This product prevents the transfer of airborne infections in a straightforward but unique way and has been fully patented.

Our approach is to generate a small, predictably shaped, air barrier and to position this barrier between individuals sitting across from each other at a desk or otherwise engaged in conversation. This barrier deflects the breath streams ...

Disease State: Heart failure and irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) result in about 1M people in the US implanted with pacing systems comprised of a pacemaker device and from 1 to 3 leads attached to the inside of the heart chambers or coronary vessels. The inherent blood-contacting nature of these endovascular leads and limitations in their placement results in over 10% complications – about $650M in healthcare costs - related to valve damage, heart wall perforations, heart failure from right ventricle pacing, ventricular dyssynchrony, endocarditis, inappropriate shocks, and lead failures. Traditionally-placed coronary vessel leads are limited by the locations of coronary sinus branches, their caliber, and the associated implantation challenges. Delayed left atrium activation from right atrium pacing reduces mechanical ...

Post-operative patients who have had bladder or prostate surgery are often hospitalized several days for Continuous Bladder Irrigation, or CBI. A 3,000 ml bag of sterile water or saline hangs above the patient and drips through a tubing into a three way catheter placed in the bladder, flushing the bladder of urine and clots then exiting via the catheter, down tubing to a 4,000 ml collection bag. This set-up requires frequent manual irrigation to remove small clots which plug the tip of the catheter in the bladder.

My invention solves the two biggest problems with this system:
1) Disconnecting the tubing from the catheter to irrigate it causes potential for asepsis and frequently causes spills of ...

Innovation:
According to the WHO, developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia have a counterfeit pharmaceutical market penetration of over 30%. Distribution of counterfeit medicine poses a danger to the strength and stability of pharmaceutical delivery systems in low and middle income countries (LMICs) such as Bangladesh. Current approaches to defend supply chains are often led by redesigning government enforcement strategies. Jibon Health Technologies proposes to take a bottom up approach by using point-of-sale verification, which democratizes the process, empowering consumers to take drug safety into their own hands. Jibon Health has developed CDrug, a secure service for customers to check the validity and expiration of their medications via Short Message Service (SMS) or a web application. Customers ...

These contact lenses featuring grooves in iris region, on back side of the lens, help to retain healthy state of corneal surface and so to prolong the contact lens wearing without irritation mainly in sensitive patients.

These lenses collect into grooves during wearing the corneal surface microbiome of user when the microbiome is healthy – when bacteria on ocular surface are in homeostatic state, i. e. the present bacteria species are balanced. After all day wear, user doesn´t clean these lenses with the standard solution, but stores the lenses dry in special clean box. User has several pairs of such lenses stored dry at a time and can wear them revolvingly - each pair another day, or just keeps ...

The key to effective treatment and management of malaria in the field is rapid and accurate diagnosis. Under or over diagnosis eventually complicates the problem of malaria worldwide (total 212 million new cases and 429,000 malaria deaths in 2015)[1]. Despite advances viz. rapid diagnostics tests, fluorescent-based QBD-method and PCR are introduced, microscopy of the Geimsa-stained blood smear is the gold standard. Besides its cost-effectiveness, sensitivity and accuracy are merits of microscopic diagnosis. However, requirement of good quality microscopes and expert microscopist is a limitation, especially in rural part and small towns of developing countries.

The present application-based idea links widely available network of cell phone for rapid and accurate diagnosis of malaria in remote areas. Our team has first ...

Dental flossing is very important for preventive healthcare. It cost very little but does require commitment. I invented and patented the Dental Floss Dispenser with Clip, which attaches dental floss to a toothpaste tube. This aids in the commitment part of flossing for good health. This device requires little more than a clip on your dental floss container. I have achieved hundreds of prototypes using the type of clip on measuring tapes and slipping the clip into a slit on the average dental floss dispenser. The cost to reproduce is approximately $1.00 per unit and retail at $3.99.

Across the country dental students and instructors struggle with the following problems as they try to learn and teach periodontal hand instruments.
• Instrument tips should be positioned at specific angles, however visual observation is subjective and inconsistent even for professionals. Reverse images (mirror) and varied tooth positions (upper/lower jaw) make it extremely difficult to judge and apply correct tip angles.
• Students must wait for instructors to watch them use an instrument and after a brief subjective evaluation they are left alone again. There is no equipment or method to determine the ACTUAL angles. This is a slow and stressful process for both students and instructors and a very inefficient use of their time.

Background:
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery is performed to treat the number one human killer, heart disease. This is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world, (about 500,000 cases a year in the US). An important part of the surgery is harvesting the vessel that will be used as a graft. This important step of the surgery is performed after opening the chest by sawing through the breast bone and then cutting the tissues around the vessel on the chest wall with electrocautery on one side then the other to release the vessel. The vessel is then grafted to the heart.

Device:
Our device enables the surgeon to harvest the vessel in a ...
