While this trend will likely continue, the rapid transition to electric vehicles is estimated to increase demand for electricity by 10 to 15 percent, negating gains made through efficiency.

Sargassum is a natural, even essential, part of the Caribbean's ecosystems but these recent blooms are having a devastating impact on the region, both ecologically and economically. Many tourist areas and islands were inundated this year. It piles up onbeaches, sometimes many feet thick covering large area of shore waters and begins to decay.

Problem
To track Sargassum’s ocean path the Optical Oceanography Laboratory is currently using the Sargassum Watch System (SaWS) which is designed to use satellite data and numerical models to detect and track pelagic Sargassum in near-real time. The raw satellite data are provided by the U.S. NASA and USGS.
