Sandia National Labs has developed a new medical diagnostic tool called “SpinDx.” The SpinDx was developed for conducting simultaneous multiplexed immunoassays and white blood cell counts in less than 15 minutes. The technique is based on centrifugal microfluidics, or “lab-on-a-disk” technology, which uses centrifugal forces to manipulate samples and reagents through microfluidic channels on the disk. The device can determine a patient’s white blood cell count, analyze important protein markers, and process up to 64 assays from a single sample in a matter of minutes.

Titanium is an indispensable material in medical technology. Until now, deep-drawn parts made of titanium could only be produced by single-stage forming - this resulted in low drawing depths and thus a very limited range of parts. Furthermore, often only low precision was possible. Multi-stage cold forming was uneconomical due to the extreme stress of the tools.

STÜKEN has developed a new process to produce titanium parts in several stages in a cold forming process. This generates numerous advantages - especially for medical technology:

• The multi-stage deep-drawing process allows for high-precision components.
• The process opens up opportunities to meet new challenges and form complex geometries.
• Long, slim titanium components can be produced in a deep-drawing process.

Total hip arthroplasty is one of the most clinically successful surgeries and improves quality of life for debilitating hip disease patients. Nevertheless, 10-20% of the operations undergo a revision surgery, where risk is especially high for elderly patients. One of the common reasons of a revision surgery is loosening of the stem, which can be caused by bone resorption. This is usually done by an anesthetist where one manually analyzes these parameters and calculates the dosage. In this way the probability of error is usually high. We have invented a diagnostic sensor capable of identifying the unique gait signatures of multiple pathologies, including Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s syndrome and related conditions. Moreover, by employing proprietary sensor data processing algorithms, the measured gait data can be evaluated in real time to provide warnings of impending falls.
